Second Day Hair

Posted By: Hilary Schlesinger, Chicago, IL

I will preface this post by saying that I am probably the farthest thing from qualified to be giving beauty advice of any sort, especially hair related. My close friends will be the first to tell you about my hair issues. I am known to be obsessed with long locks and am notorious for my refusal to get haircuts. My mom and sister literally have to drag me to the salon every few months for a trim and I will no doubt be found crying in the car after every single appointment. Any professional will tell you that this behavior is the exact opposite of what you should do to maintain and grow healthy long hair… not to mention the exact opposite of acting like a healthy adult, but whatever. That pretty much sums up how qualified I am to advise on hair… and life. So who wants to hear what I have to say???

I commend those of you that are still reading this.

Great hair is obviously a personal preference thing, but my favorite style for girls is long natural looking waves. I’m talking Victoria’s Secret model beach waves. A girl can dream…

My hair dries semi-wavy, but it is a slave to the weather and my body heat / sweating problems, which are two totally separate issues (I sure sound fun!). I usually let my hair air-dry after I shower and then go over it with a straightener, which makes it easier to manage, but also flat and boring looking. I have spent way too much money purchasing products and utensils of all sorts, such as shampoos, serums, sprays, irons, brushes… even a hair mask, which was just weird on all accounts.

However, there is only one thing that does the trick for me, and it’s free! Beauty sleep. Yep, that’s my brilliant revelation. I’m not really sure what I do in my sleep exactly, but I wake up and find that my dull hair has come back to life. It’s the perfect mix of tame and imperfect all at once and looks pretty awesome, unless I go overboard with the tossing and turning, which does happen from time to time.

So next time you find yourself frustrated with your hair, just go take a nap, hit up some REM, and who knows, you might wake up pretty.

Sweet dreams.
